Bangor put to the sword by Bloomfield 12/10/09

24 hours of torrential rain didn't dampen the determination and guile of Bloomfield, who returned home to the haven of Orangefield after three weeks on the road to face a Bangor outfit who came to the party with some mixed results behind them.

Reverting back to a 4-4-2- formation Bloomfield set about Bangor in the opening exchanges in a manner that can only be described as Cavalier. They were rewarded 15minutes in when Makkers was felled by a crude challenge 25 yards out. Ryan Hamilton sent a rocket that lifted no more than a foot off the ground, it swerved fiercely, the keeper failed to hold and was hapless to watch the ball bounce into the net. Bloomfield continued to dominate for the next ten minutes. Savage was only called upon a few times to clear his lines. The ball broke down the left to Hamilton, who evaded the Bangor midfield to feed Makkers, beating a man he fed Shields who slid the ball to Kyle who let the ball cross his path before unleashing a bullet of a shot leaving the Bangor keeper no chance. A wonderful team goal that would grace any park. But Bangor rallied and wouldn't lie down. They won a free kick 25 yards out and showed great tenacity, taking it quick to catch Bloomfield out. Savage could do nothing only to watch the ball fly past him and into the net.

Half time: Bloomfield 2 - 1 Bangor.

Bangor came out strong in the second period stretching Murray & McIlvenny in the central area. One such sortie resulted in a corner. It was swung in low, it was slotted home from close range. It was a disappointing concession that should have been cleared, but more importantly it gave Bangor a foothold in the game. Bangor forced Bloomfield into some desperate defending. But with 20 minutes to go the Bloomfield management threw caution to the wind. Bloomfield went 3-4-3.It proved to be a masterstroke. McIlvenny & Shields were replaced by Scott & Feenan, and it paid dividends almost immediately, when Bloomfield forced a corner. Spence sent a teaser in from the left, Big Ryan Huston rose like a gazelle under pressure to head home from 8 yards. Bloomfield took control of the game from then on in. A long clearance from Savage was left to run through the Bangor rear-guard, Feenan was alert to it and kept his composure to slot the ball home. Bloomfield saw the match out and could have added to their total in the dying minutes.

Full time: Bloomfield 4 - 2 Bangor.

Man Of the Match: Ryan Hamilton

Bloomfield Edge Epic Encounter 12/09/09

Bloomfield U16's V SOPYC U16's
Orangefield 12.09.09

As good a conditions that you could possibly expect for this time of year, greeted both B'field & SOPYC on the first day of the SBYL season. Both teams had played out a high scoring draw in a preseason friendly just a few weeks previous, and the masses that gathered O'field to were anticipating a similar goal fest.

The Young Guns, started with a 4-4-2 formation and proceeded to dominate the opening exchanges, going close on a couple of occasions, Feenen produced a good save, and Huston warming the hands of the SOPYC keeper moments later . But as the half progressed the West Belfast outfit grew in confidence, gaining the upper hand and stretching the home teams midfield. A good move down the left saw the SOPYC striker shoot from distance beating Savage, only to see his effort bounce away to safety off the crossbar. That rallied the Young Guns into another gear and reclaim the midfield battle, and mounting a series of attacks of their own, Hamilton was freely advancing in the left channel, and Spence making his debut coming close on a few occassions. The half time whistle blew both teams came in unlucky to score.

Half time 0-0.

Second half team talks must have worked as both side came out of the blocks all guns blazing, this was not a match for the faint hearted. SOPYC made the breakthrough 10mins in as the ball broke free from the left and the striker slipped the ball below the advancing Savage. The young Guns rallied and mounted sortie after sortie. Murray & K Johnston replaced S Johnston & Lowden. Within minutes Bloomfield were level. After good work from Hamilton and Feenan, the Young Guns won a corner, Hamilton sent in a teaser, for Big Ryan Huston to bang in from 10 yards. This brought about rapturous celebrations on the Bloomfield bench. The young guns were on the up, and the introduction of Scott, replacing Walsh proved to be decisive. Hutchinson and Spence combined to create havoc in the opposition area, the ball broke loose and Scott slid in to make 2-1. But to their credit SOPYC never laid down and mounted a series of counters that were dealt with by the B'field back 4. After one such raid, the Young Guns broke free the impressive Spence released Hutchinson on the right, who cut inside a-mid a few challenges and with the deftest of chips scored a 3rd. Still SOPYC would not lie down, and scored with a neat piece of work on the left. It was pulsating stuff and as the ref blew the final whistle there was a sigh of relief from the Bloomfield faithful.

An Epic Encounter and an extordinary effort was put in by all the squad. Well done.

Man of the Match: Ryan Huston.

B'Field from : Savage, Mason,Thompson, S Johnston, McIlvenny, Murray, Hamilton, Lowden, McConnell, Huston, Hutchinson, Walsh, Scott, Spence, Feenan & K Johnstone.

Northern Ireland V Jamacia at World Championships 18/08/09

Last night in very hot and humid conditions in Rarotonga in the South Pacific, Northern Ireland Under 21 Netball Team met with Jamaica in the first of the World Championships Quarter Finals. The Sun Shine Girls as the Jamaican team is know didn’t expect the NI girls to put up the fight they did. This was without doubt the best match the Under 21’s have played at this competition and according to their coach Jackie Portis there were a number of outstanding performances of which the most notable was WA Laura Mason, the young nineteen year old who plays her netball for Assumption Grammar School and Larkfield Netball Club in Lisburn was outstanding. Laura stands at 5 foot 2 inches and all of the Jamaican’s tower over her with the GS standing at 6 foot 5 inches, it’s no wonder the Sun Shine girls didn’t know how to handle her dodging and passing on the court.

The job of marking the tall shooter, Remelda Akins fell to NI goal keeper Laura Mc Donald who never gave up in her efforts to stop the lobbed ball coming into the circle. Laura play’s her netball with Belfast Ladies Netball Club and is a past pupil of Our Lady and St. Patricks in Knock. She continually stopped the Jamaicans from settling and kept the score line at quarter time to a respectable 17 goals to 10. Clare Henry playing at GD made this an outstanding effort by the defence in delaying the Jamaican’s attempt’s on goal. By half time the Jamaicans had only increased their lead to 39 goals to 22

The introduction of Deborah Mc Carthy, Sophie Mc Clean and Kirsty Owens saw all the NI team who were fit take to the court, experience the Caribbean style of netball. The introduction of fresh legs disrupted the flow of the game for the Sun Shine girls and at one stage the NI team reduced the deficit to 8 goals. However with a number of mystery injuries called by coach Portis’s opposite number, C’Llyod Walker proved to be very successful as they continued to increase their score line.

The final score of 78 to 39 (this was the highest number of goals scored against the Jamaicans so far in the competition) certainly didn’t reflect the efforts of the girls in green, and the appreciation of the crowd at the end of the match was certainly an indication of a great match. The plaudits from many of the coaches and indeed the match umpire Gary Burgess from London who said, “ those girls made him feel proud that they came from my neck of the woods”.

The coaching staff and management of the Northern Ireland’s under 21 applauded the girls as they left the court and all involved with the team felt extremely proud.

NI U21 Netball team reach quarter finals of World Championships 15/08/09

Today was the “big one” for the NI Netball U21 team as they had to win to come second in their group to New Zealand and to enable them to qualify for a top eight spot in the World U21 rankings.

The build up to the game was a tense affair with the players being up at 6 a.m. for an early morning training session. The mood was quiet on the bus travelling to the Auditorium, but within ten minutes of arriving everyone was wide awake and willing to work hard for the game in hand.

The match was goal for goal throughout the first quarter when Michelle Drayne made a timely interception and a breakaway goal was scored. The score at the end of the first quarter was 13 10 in Northern Irelands favour.

The girls had now settled down and continued to play well together in the second quarter and increased their lead by 11 to leave the score line at 27 16. Continued good feeding from attacking players Laura Mason and Michelle Drayne allowed Kyla Bowman to create space for the feed to the goal shooter Lisa Bowman, thus giving NI a score line of 39 24 at the end of the third quarter.

Coach Portis made two changes for the last quarter, introducing Clare Henry at WD and Sarah Montgomery at GA. Both girls played well, and with the defence of Laura McDonald and Deborah McCarthy being so commanding against the Barbados Goal Shooters, Northern Ireland finished with a winning margin of 50 33.

Northern Ireland now play Jamaica in the quarter finals on Monday night 17 August at 7.15 p.m.

NI U21 Netball Team

NI U21 Netball team fall to first defeat at World Championships 14/08/09

Today saw the NI Under 21 team face the Mighty all blacks of New Zealand and right from the first whistle the NI girls where under the cosh with their opponents being very aggressive in their attacking play and leading the game by a substantial score. Northern Ireland where very slow to get started and only after some changes in the second quarter did the NI girls put up any resistance to the Kiwis.

After half time coach Jackie Portis took the opportunity to give her whole squad the chance to play against the world’s number one side and made several changes. The NI girls knew they had a battle on their hands when many of them left the court battered and bruise after a very physical encounter.

NI made a tremendous effort in the final quarter when their opponents tried to accumulate a score of 100 but they were halted by some strong defensive play by Laura Mc Donald and Deborah Mc Carthy who stopped their shooter at 97.

Northern Ireland scored a very Valliant 26 goals.

Commenting after the match Jackie said “ she was delighted with the efforts of the whole team and that all players had come through the match injury free”. Northern Ireland face Barbados tomorrow (Saturday) in what will be the decider for the 2nd place spot and see the team who win’s progress to the quarter final and a top 8 spot in world rankings.
